Whitebaiting on the West Coast of the South Island 2006

Whitebait can be difficult to spot in the tea coloured water typical of the South Island's West Coast. Having whitebait in the bucket is a good feeling. Some days whitebaiters can make huge catches running to many kilograms; whilst on other days catches will be more modest. Each day when you arrive at the river there is no telling whether it will be a good or poor day. The only answer is to fish every day available during the three month season.
