Whitebaiting on the West Coast of the South Island 2006
Picture of a man fishing with a pole net for whitebait at the mouth of the Oakrito River, West Coast of New Zealand.
Pole netting can be hard work, especially in discoloured water when you can't see the bait. Many use this method only for the first hour or two on the push of the incoming tide when generally the best fishing is to be had. A pair of neoprene gloves are a good investment. They keep the hands warm; even when wet. Plus they offer good protection from sand flies and sun burn. Okarito River, Westland.
