| I should be able to catch a kahawai on this long rod! Though I only managed one medium sized kahawai it sure tasted good on the barbeque. It was gutted and gilled and placed straight on the grill. | Salmon anglers moored together at Mcintoshes Hole. The salmon fishing in the Waimak has been much slower than last year. However the best salmon fishing in this river last year was during March. | ||

Waimakariri Salmon 2009 The schools of kahawai don't seem to be present this year. Once they were nearly always milling around the river mouth. I did manage to get one on a ticer the other day albeit a medium sized fish. To target kahawai go right down to the very end of the river where it meets the surf and cast out as far as you can with a silver ticer. Then wind it back in as fast as you can. Any kahawai about will home in on your lure almost immediately. Be very careful though as this can be quite dangerous! The temptation is to wade out that little bit further to get more distance. This isn't necessary as the kahawai - if they are there - will be right in behind and amongst the breakers. Return to: Waimakariri Salmon - Return to: Home Page
