Boat Fishing for Salmon

Most salmon caught at Macintoshes Hole on the Waimakariri River are taken by anglers casting zed spinners from the rocks. However those who fish from small boats seem to have a definite advantage. Hooked salmon will actually tow your boat around as they try to escape. You have to be careful to avoid the anchor rope! More baot fishing at McIntoshes Rocks.

You may also be interested in seeing a picture of one of the biggest salmon ever caught in New Zealand. It was caught in the Waimakariri River.

Where do salmon come from? Young salmon and trout are breed and raised at the Montrose hatchery, on the upper Rakaia River, for release in to various lakes and rivers by North Canterbury Fish and Game.
