Salmon Angling Waimakariri River
Salmon from the Waimakariri
Salmon caught at MacIntoshes Rocks near the mouth of the Waimakariri River. Some years the salmon are smaller. However big or small they are never easy to catch! Any day you can get one to take your lure is a "red letter" day to remember. Below: A silver zed spinner. Perhaps 90 percent of the salmon taken on the lower Waimakariri River would be taken on this brass spoon which has been electroplated. The typical weight being 28g, though some anglers prefer them heavier or lighter. Very sharp hooks are an absolute must to penetrate the hard mouth of a Chinook salmon.
Zed Spinner

Typical 22 or 28 gram zed spinner used to catch salmon on spin fishing tackle at mcIntoshes Rocks on the Waimakariri River. Super sharp hooks are essential as salmon have hard mouths.
