Mokihinui Gentle Annie Beach
Joe with conger
Left: Reknown Christchurch surfcaster and angler Joe Chidgey holds up a conger eel caught at Gentle Annie Beach, Mokihinui , West Coast of the South Island.

You can catch snapper, kahawai, rig, conger eel, stingray, gurnard and other species from this steeply shelving beach. I was there one year when a bloke caught a blue shark off the beach and another angler landed a big stingray! Picture below. A fishing contest is held there over Christmas which runs for 10 days and is popular with campers staying at the rivermouth camping ground. This is a beautiful part of the world with excellent fishing. Also brown trout in the river. Excellent whitebaiting in season.

Hooked into a snapper at Gentle Annie Beach. This is one of the best surfcasting beaches on the South Island's rugged West Coast. You have to watchout for the sandflies! Gentle Annie Beach snapper
