| The road to Lake Selfe and Lake Coleridge winds it's way up the north bank of the upper Rakaia River pictured on a glorious mid-winters day. The snow capped Rolleston Range in the distance forms part of the South Island's Southern Alps. In the foreground you can see the New Zealand native Matagouri thorn bushes, also known as Wild Irishman, that are a feature around most Canterbury high country lakes. At this altitude of around 500 meters above sea level the days can often be warm and sunny (even in mid-winter) but the nights a very cold (even in high summer). Therefore all anglers are advised to carry plenty of warm clothing. Some times it can snow down to lake and river level so you must always be prepared for a longer stay than anticipated.
