A brace of average size landlocked salmon from Lake Coleridge. |
Introduced quinnat salmon are also caught in several Canterbury high country lakes notably lakes Coleridge and Sumner. They are the same species of quinnat salmon that return to the major South Island east coast rivers each summer to spawn. But because they are landlocked they cannot feed at sea and so do not grow much heavier than a couple of kilos. Most weigh about 1kg. In Lake Coleridge landlocked quinnat salmon are the dominant catch for anglers who mostly take them trolling from motor boats or spin fishing around the shoreline.
Lake Coleridge Opening Weekend.
When spin fish for salmon in Lake Coleridge the best lures are often black hex wobblers weighing 15-20g as these are easy to cast and sink down to where the fish are. Silver and green hex wobblers are also good. When the lake is rough and it is raining the salmon will be near the surface and can be caught on Tasmanian Devils and Cobras.
