Salmon fishing at sunrise

Salmon anglers fishing the mouth of the Rangitata River in the early morning light, Canterbury, New Zealand

The best time of day to fish for salmon is the period between first light and sun-up. This is not a good time for some anglers to get out of bed. In high summer you need to be up at four o'clock in the morning! Your lure could be the first the salmon has ever seen. You get first crack at any salmon that have arrived during the night. Dawn is the best time of day for nearly any type of fishing.
