Rangitata River

The "Rangi," as it is affectionately known to most anglers, is a typical braided river similar to the Rakaia but with lower flows, often below 100 cumecs in high summer. The Rangi is greatly affected by water taken to irrigate farm land. Despite the wrangles over water the "Rangi" still offers some of the best salmon fishing to be found in New Zealand.

Rangitata River Mouth Fishing MAP

Another good sized salmon from the surf at the mouth of the "Rangitata River. Note the low-mount reel position on the long rod. This is now standard.

This big salmon weighed 29lbs and was caught at the mouth of the Rangitata by Clive Gilbert.
