Rakaia Salmon Fishing Contest February 2006
Many of the huge numbers of prizes were drawn at the Rakaia River Salmon Fishing Contest held on the weekend 24-26 February 2006. Compare John Gadsby left talks with Kerry Whiting at the prize giving. Kerry's salmon weighed 7.24kg and was the heaviest salmon caught during the contest.

Kerry Whiting (left) at the prize giving. In all there were some 700 contestants, with 24 salmon and 71 trout caught altogether. The salmon that were caught were in excellent condition but small. The Rakaia River was running very low and clear during the event.

Morris Clark sits atop his prizes; a brand new Kawasaki 300cc quad bike worth $11,995 complete with a new KPL Engineering purpose built trailer to move it to the river. With just 24 salmon caught in total over the three days of the event there was a one in 24 chance of winning this top prize drawn from all who caught a salmon.
