Searun Brown Trout Rakaia River
Big searun brown trout from the Rakaia River

A magnificent searun brown trout taken at the Rakaia River mouth. Some of the searun brown trout caught in the lower Rakaia River during the months of October, November December and January, run to the magical double figures (pounds that is!).

Most searun are taken on lures (streamer flies). The best lures are Yellow Rabbits, Hopes Silvery and Parson Glory. Many other patterns work well also. Use a darker lure as the evening draws in or when fishing discoloured water. The completely yellow coloured Yellow Lady lure is also popular particularly when fishing in discoloured water.
