Anglers Fish for Salmon at the Rakaia River Mouth
Salmon anglers at the mouth of the Rakaia River.

Anglers fish a big run of salmon at the mouth of the Rakaia River. In a good season there will be at least one day when several hundred salmon are caught here. You just have to be there at the right time!

When the river is low salmon will congregate in the surf waiting a "fresh" through the river. The best fishing comes as the river water starts to show colour from heavy rain in the high country.

Note the jet boats anchored just beyond casting range. There are anglers fishing the surf, the gut, and the river's lower reaches. It is times like these salmon anglers dream about.
