| Quinnat salmon numbers are much lower on the West Coast. The fish are also on average smaller. The rivers are generally shorter on the "Coast" and are subject to sudden flash flooding following heavy rain. Though being shorter they do clear faster.
Generally the best salmon fishing on the West Coast is centered on the lakes and rivers south of Hokitika. The two hot spots are Lake Paringa , south of Fox Glacier and Lake Mapourika, inland from Okarito Lagoon. The odd quinnat salmon is also taken in other rivers as far north as Greymouth.
Sand flies are a "special feature" of the West Coast. Always take essential measures to combat them by wearing waders and applying liberal quantities of insect repellent. It is tempting while visiting the coast by car to stop at a likely looking river on the way and make a few quick casts. Be warned! This is just the opportunity the ravenous sand flies will have been waiting for. By the time you realize you have been bitten it is too late. By that stage you will have numerous itching bites that can drive you mad and ruin your holiday.
