The Waiau River mouth is some 18 kilometres to the north east of the Hurunui mouth. However there is no road access to the mouth of the Waiau River. Access to the lower reaches being by jet boat only. The Waiau is regarded as the northern most salmon river. It is also a good trout fishery with easy access to the middle and upper river.
