Looking back upriver from the mouth on the south side. Watch out for the sand flies!

Salmon fishing can be variable in the Taramakau River with searun quinnat salmon strating to run the river in December. There is good access to the mouth and the river's middle reaches. Some searun brown trout fishing in the lower river but fish numbers are not high nor are the fish large. The Taramakau is extremely popular with whitebaiters during the season 1 September to 14 November.
This is one of the West Coast's bigger rivers. The lower reaches are sweep clear of dense native bush making for good angler access unlike many of the other rivers in the region.
Again salmon numbers are not high and the river can rise rapidly following rain. Insect repellent is an absolute must. The sandflies bite anything that moves - even in the middle of winter when there is a heavy frost in the mornings the sandflies still bite!
