Kaniere Lake and River Variable salmon fishing. Wonderful bush setting. A 5.3kg salmon was caught at Lake Mapourika during the February 2011 Salmon Fishing Competition. There were also 4000 rainbow fingerlings released into Lake Mapourika in 2011 by Fish and Game. The rainbows were raised at Montrose hatchery in the headwaters of Canterbury's Rakaia River. According to Fish and Game anglers caught plenty of well conditioned 2lb rainbows over the christmas period at Lake Kaniere from releases made the previous year.
