You can also see the scenic Kaikoura Coastal highway winding it's way northward.This whole coastline is excellent habitat for crayfish. As you drive along the highway you can see the crayfish pot marker buoys bobbing in the swell. The sea is very deep along this stretch of coast. At this point it is around 1 km deep just 1 km from shore. There are numerous charter vessels that take both anglers and tourists for trips along the coast. In the later case to see the whales and dolphins in particular. There are also large numbers of seabirds to be found here. The Trans Scenic train also follows the coast providing passengers with the most spectacular views of the rugged coast and snow capped Seaward Kaikoura Mountains You can often see large schools of kahawai and barracouta close to shore as they work schools of bait fish. |
