| Environment Canterbury River Flow Levels |
| Salmon and trout anglers can check riverflows free of charge on the Environment Canterbry website. The link is near the top of the righthand column on this page. Salmon anglers say that if you can see your toes when standing knee-deep in the river then it is fishable. Also dirty water usually moves northward as it enters the sea. Often you can fish for salmon, searun trout and kahawai from the beach on the south side of the rivermouth provided the sea isn't stirring things up. Watch for birds working surface schools of silveries. Sometimes there is excellent salmon fishing from the beach on the southside even when the main river is dirty and unfishable. Salmon will of course still run the rivers even when they are in flood. Many salmon anglers incorectly believe it is no use fishing if the river isn't clear. Often the best salmon fishing takes place after a flood as the river turns from brown to green. Try a yellow or black zed spinner as these colours are easier for the salmon to see. |
