The former 97 foot coastal trader Tuhoe maneuvers near the mouth of Canterbury's Waimakariri River during a Sunday afternoon tourist excursion. The Tuhoe was built in 1919 by G.T. Niccol, in Auckland for Northern Steam Ship. Co. Ltd. She has had a colourful career part of which included service in the Pacific during World War II. She was also a long line fishing vessel for a time! The lower tidal reaches of the Waimakariri River, up to the confluence with the Kaiapoi River, is only a couple of metres deep. Trips are timed to coincide with high tide. In mid 1963 Tuhoe became stranded for several days while making a crossing of the Waimakariri River bar. |
