Kaikoura Peninsula lies on the distant horizon. You can see how the end of the lagoon is well north of the actual rivermouth. When the river is in spat (floods) it often breaks a new exit through the shingle spit as it looks for a more direct outlet. However when the river hasn't flooded for some time the breaking waves of the sea are winning the "battle" and the entrance moves further north. This same battle between sea and rivers occurs also at the mouths of the Rangitata, Rakaia and Waitaki Rivers. In pre-European times this changing of direction also took place with the Waimakariri River which at one time ran through the middle of what is now Christchurch City!
