Many salmon anglers prefer to fish the surf instead of the river. Which is the best place to fish depends on the sea and river conditions. You have to be flexible. If the river is very low salmon may be waiting in the surf just off the beach for the river to run higher. If the sea is rough and the river is clear you are better to fish the river.
Salmon fishing in the surf requires specialist long rods needed to cast long distances. Sometimes you need to cast over the river to the surf beyond.
