| Paul Mason with a couple of Fiordland groper fished up from deep water while fishing aboard the Genesis II. Rather than being caught in the open ocean these fish were caught only a few hundred metres from a mountain side. It is amazing just how deep the fiords can be so close to shore. The top water layer is often stained a tea colour while in other parts of the fiords it looks jet black. There are also many large trees floating on, or just below, the surface which are a hazard to navigation. See also this picture of groper taken on the same trip. Groper caught by Ken Mitchell.
Groper caught in Cook Strait.
Groper taken at the Hole, Pegasus Canyon, Canterbury Coast.
