Trolling and Harling on Lake Brunner

Beech trees march down to the shoreline between Howitt Point and Pah Point. Where the bush overhangs water trout are sure to be looking for food falling from the trees.
Beach trees Howitt Point and Pah Point. We have caught many trout here over the years by casting spinners in towards the shore line.

Beech trees march down to the shoreline between Howitt Point and Pah Point. Where the bush overhangs water trout are sure to be looking for food falling from the trees. Lake Brunner gets a bit shallow here but has often yielded a brownie for us on light spinning gear. Cast as close to the trees as possible then vary your retrieve to induce a strike!

The tea coloured water makes it difficult to spot the butter coloured brown trout of Lake Brunner. Most fish are taken deep trolling either with a downrigger or more typically a lead line used for harling. The secret harling fly is a Woolly Bugger in grey, olive, brown or black. The gold coloured Tillins Cobra is an excellent lure for trolling and harling. This lake even though tea coloured is still very clear. We found it best to play out plenty of line behind the boat as the trout are weary and easily spooked.

Fly anglers will find a boat an asset as much of the lake is difficult to access on foot particularly when the water level is high. A good option if you don't have a boat is to talk to one of the local fishing guides who should be able to drop your party off and collect you later for a quite reasonable fee.

There is good foot access from the road to the banks of the Crooked River. This is top dry fly water.

Most trout are caught Harling and Trolling on Lake Brunner; flyfishing is the norm in the feeder streams and Arnold River outlet. Lake Brunner brown trout caught fishing with guide Brent Beadle, huge brown trout, Lake Brunner map, a new Lake Brunner holiday home, sometimes the lake can rise over the Moana jetty following heavy rain, and floods the lake margins, yachts on Lake Brunner, there are some very good rainbow trout as well, another butter coloured brown trout, one last brown trout from Lake Brunner. Lake Brunner is a great place for fishing and family boating beach picnics to inaccessible places. A brace of dark coloured brown trout from taken trolling on Lake Brunner. A Fish and Game officer measures and weighs each fish entered in the local Lake Brunner fishing contest. A fantastic view across Lake Brunner from the motels at Moana. You can see trout rising here in the early morning stillness for miles across the lake.
