This is an excellent little book produced by the old Southland Acclimatisation Society. It was aimed at visitors and Southlanders alike. Packed with detailed descriptions of Southland's many excellent trout waters and, when combined with the equally detailed large fold-out maps, makes the perfect traveling companion for the visiting angler. Covering both lakes and rivers, it is apparent that fishing all the waters described would take many summers.

There is also a list of suitable trout flies to employ, and a discussion on the diet of trout in Southland. There are also useful notes on accommodation. Obviously some of the information on things like bag limits and accommodation will be out of date.

I have traveled throughout most of New Zealand and I would describe Lake Manapouri as the most beautiful lake I have seen. Such a vista must be witnessed first hand by everyone at least once in their lives. Southland has an enormous amount to offer the visiting trout angler. Allan Burgess
