Look Closely is an intriguing fishing book. Built around the title theme, the stories
tell how the author, an experienced brown trout fisherman, pursues his quarry
quietly and thoughtfully. Sometimes he fails, sometimes he succeeds. Sometimes
he makes us laugh.
But the book offers us more than fishing anecdotes and humour. Buried in the stories
are insights into the nature of trout food and trout ways, and, consequently, fresh
wisdom about fishing strategies. There are many ideas here that can't be found in
any other New Zealand fishing book, making this not only an entertaining but also
informative read.
John McInnes is well known for his best-selling fishing book, Tread Quietly, Stories
from a New Zealand Trout Fisherman, published in 1983. He currently lives in Ngaio,
Wellington, and spends much of his time fishing the rivers around Pahiatua and
Woodville. He is a contributing writer for periodicals and magazines both in New
Zealand and overseas. |
