Drag netting works well when the beach is shallow. I like this method because it is easier to carry and set up than a large box net and gobys. The frame is made from pvc pipe and fitted with a sock net from the tackle store. As far as I am aware you can't buy this type of net so will have to make your own.

When the bait are running it is possible to catch quite a lot in a short time. The only problem is you don't know exactly when the whitebait will be running! I was told recently that it takes 1,000 whitebait to make a pound; but can't confirm that! Whitebait drag netting on Youtube.
The author having a quick go with a scoop net. I caught 19 whitebait on my first drag. Typical Waimakariri River mouth box net in place.

The M.V. Tuhoe takes passengers on a sightseeing trip from Kaiapoi to the Waimakariri River mouth. When using a pole net in the surf you need to tie a sinker in the end to keep it on the bottom.

Seal on the beach at the Waimakariri River mouth.

It is possible to use a scoop net in the surf but you tend to get a sore back from bending over.
