The Waitaki River straddles the border between South Canterbury to the north and North Otago to the south. State Highway One passes through Glenavy approximately 4kms from the river mouth. The motor camp on the south bank at the seaward end of Kaik Road is very popular with salmon anglers during the fishing season. Anglers can ride their quad bikes from the Kaik Camping Ground down to the river mouth on the south side.
