I went fishing recently with my 72 year old father Max. We have an ex IRB from North Piha and we went out from Bayleys Beach near Dargaville.
It was a bit rough and he nearly got tipped out but i grabbed his leg and hauled him in (not my driving of course).
I caught 5 decent sharks which we cut off as a rubber boat full of air is not very forgiving when chomped. He hooked up to what we thought was another shark and just as I was about to cut him off out popped a big snapper from under the boat. It weighted in at a tad over 22 lb and was 82 cm long. I got my 5 year old to pose against it.
It was the biggest snapper we have seen. many thanks Simon for sending us the picture.
