Rangitata Salmon
Here is a very interesting early black and white photograph sent in by Rosalie Wallen of her Granddad, Albert Victor Simmons, with a quinnat salmon he caught in 1951. He appears to be wearing waders of some sort, and looks very smart in shirt and tie. Special thanks to Rosalie for sending in the picture.

This 20 lb quinnat, or chinook, salmon was caught on the 20th Jan 1951. That is just 46 years after salmon were successfully introduced in to New Zealand. The first successful introductions were made into the Waitaki River.

More on early salmon introductions.
