An island has formed at the end of the shingle spit on the south side of the Rakaia River Mouth. Last weekend in was access able at low tide. i hooked and landed kahawai off the end but waited until the tide was low first.
In this picture you can sea where the gut is being covered by incoming waves. Some of the locals told me that on at least two occasions anglers have been caught on the island as the spit is cut behind them. They had to be rescued by jet boat.
A good sear-run trout taken near the end of the Rakaia River gut on a feathered lure fished on spinning gear.
