Parsons' Glory |
Strange as it may sound my favourite lure for searun trout fishing in Canterbury is a well known Taupo fly called the Parsons Glory. I've had 12" trout with a size 2 lure completely inside their mouths, the most success I've had has been in the Waimakariri River. I've used Hopes Silveries and Grey Ghosts, but of all the lures that represent the naturals this fly, I've found, out fishes them all. One Boxing Day I went down to the Waimakariri River. The river had seen some pretty big floods earlier that season and a nice piece of water had formed by the old main road bridge. Arriving early that evening, a few fishermen were there fishing already. A few trout were splashing through the silveries and a salmon rose just in front of me. As it began to get darker the trout came onto the fly. My first fish was a five pound fresh run brownie. I kept him as I had plans for him later.
Two casts later and I had another fish on, this one fought hard and the reason was a nice three pound Rainbow. It was back to the water with him, another cast and another fish. Two runs then off - oh well that's fishing and this was fun.
Another cast or two and another fish. This one a brownie about three and a half pounds, back with him and away home. A great night's fishing in anyone's langauge.
Tie the fly on hook sizes 2 or 4 Mustad or Kamasan. Sometimes I tie on Mustad salmon hooks - you never know! The body is Yellow chenille wool. Tail whisks of red hackle fibres. The wing is honey grizzle neck hackles tied vertical along the body from the head. Tie in at the head four strands of Krystal Flash yellow. Wind tinsel through the hackle. Don't overdo the number of turns, four or five at the most. Spin a hackle of honey grizzle, tie in the tip end first. Then last of all add two tips of jungle cock feather (optional) but I think it helps. It may seem an easy fly to tie but it's not always the fanciest flies that work the best.
