I have another night fly favourite of mine for you to tie. It is the Doll Fly. Most flies are tied to match the hatch or imitate underwater life that represents a particular trout food. The Doll Fly is simply an attractor fly. This pattern is used a lot in the North Island for spawning rainbows in the streams that flow into Lake Taupo and the Rotorua Lakes. It works in the South Island just as well. The body is made from luminous material. When you shine your torch on it for a few seconds, it glows long enough to last for four or five casts. I tie this fly on hook sizes 4, 6 or 8, Kamasan B175 or Mustad 3666.
Tie in a red tuft of poly wing (poly yarn) as a tag. On top; tie in enough of the green poly wing to do the whole back and yet still be able to hold it back out of the way.
You can wrap a body of aurora skirt around the hook but it's very fragile on trout's teeth, so by using luminous tubing and sliding that down over the eye of the hook you'll have a much more durable body that will last the life of the fly. Shine your torch on it for a few seconds will allow long enough for four or five casts.
Pull your green poly wing down over the top to form the back. Tie in a few whisks of pearl krystal flash under the throat and tie off.
This is a simple fly to tie, so when fishing at night always have a few in your fly box.
You might like to vary your colours. Try a pearl back.
You can also fish them in tandem. I have had a lot of success down in Lake Benmore around Show Weekend. It also fishes well in Lake Selfe, so get tying.
tage 4: Tie in pearl krystal flash as throat, tie off and apply head cement to finish off.
