Hakatere Corner to Mt Somers 24 kms. Hakatere Corner to Lake Heron is 16 kms over shingle road. Hakatere Corner to Lake Clearwater is 10 kms over shingle road. The other lakes in the Ashburton Group include: Lake Clearwater, Lake Camp, Lake Denny, Lake Emily, Lake Emma, Lake Heron, Lake Roundabout, Lake Spider and the two small Maori Lakes. This barren, almost tree-less, tussock high country is a very beautful part of New Zealand and certainly worth a visit over the summer months. These is no fishing over winter on the Ashburton Lakes - many of which freeze over during the colder part of the year when the high tops, and often the valleys as well, become covered with snow..
